About

Jess Dadds is a new generation UK filmmaker, writing/directing films often focused on youth culture and social issues, whilst making them in a way that is progressive within independent cinema.

Jess’ latest short film “I am good at karate” was shot on location on a mixture of colour, and hand-processed b&w 16mm, whilst collaborating with a mixture of first time performers and traditionally trained actors. Breaking the tradition that British films about social issues have to be presented in a certain style of social realism.

“I am good at karate” was awarded a special mention by the international jury at Encounters Film Festival due to how the film “explores the complex intersections of class, mental health and coming of age, with a strong self-assured visual style” The film also screened at various other BAFTA and Academy Award qualifying film festivals, such as Oberhausen, Montreal Du Nouveau Cinema and LSFF.

Jess is currently in the early development stages of his first feature project.
